An ongoing concern among many people involves the validity of college degrees that are earned through, what some consider as, a nontraditional method.
That’s a fancy way of saying that many people wonder whether a college degree that is earned online is worth anything. From all of the bad press these types of degrees received in years gone by, the question doesn’t surprise me in the least.
A look back in time
Once upon a time, the only way that a person could earn a college degree was to take the time to attend a college or university. This would mean that the student in question would need to forego working a day job, spending time with the family, or having a life like the rest of us.
A turning point
At some point after the development of the internet, several less than trustworthy individuals figured out that they could make a tremendous amount of money by offering college degrees online. These crooks took millions of unsuspecting students’ money and then either offered nothing in the way of accredited course work or provided classes that were worth virtually nothing.
The companies that stole all of this money from the students for the most part are no longer in existence. Thank God. There are probably a few of them that are still in operation, but they are few and far in between.
In the early years of the internet, it was easy to fool some folks into paying for worthless college courses and degrees. Those days are long gone. People are now more sophisticated about anything involving the internet and getting a higher education is no exception.
There are many places to earn a degree
Let’s say that for the sake of argument that the majority of institutions that offer online college degrees are legitimate. Many of these institutions are colleges and universities that maintain both a physical presence (a campus) and an online presence at the same time.
The Online or on campus degrees that are earned from these institutions are the same. There is no difference between the two of them. Online degrees are accepted by employers. Employers will only see that you have earned a degree in your choice of a major.
There are also many well know and accredited institutions that exist only within the online world. They offer similar course work as the others mentioned above. They also offer accredited degrees in a variety of majors.
Look before you leap
The key to determining the validity of these places is to check them out completely before you make any decisions about making a commitment to them. The same advice can be applied to any college or university you might be thinking about attending.
A few facts about online degrees
Online education fills the void for the majority of us that want a higher education and need to maintain a life outside of college.
