Once you decide that you might want to get a master’s degree in education, you will have to make two more decisions: what concentration you wish to choose, and which school you want to attend. Deciding on the first option will help you choose the second, as you will have to find a school which offers the program that you wish to attend.

First, you are going to choose what type of program works best for you. Masters degrees in education range from certification programs in Elementary Education, Special Education and Secondary School Content Areas, to School Librarians to Leadership programs for principals as well as a wide range in between. Think about your future career.
How to Choose the Best Masters in Education Program

Do you see yourself teaching in the classroom? What subject? What age range? Maybe you see yourself running the school instead and getting a M.Ed in Leadership. Or maybe you wish to coach students in Speech Pathology or introduce them to the real world by being a Guidance Counselor. These all require a different graduate program.

When choosing the school, first make sure that they have the program that you wish to pursue. There is no reason to apply to and register for a program you have no passion or use for. Next, check if they offer it in the format you prefer.

For instance, if you wish to attend online, then they must offer it online. Other common formats include: day full time, night part time, accelerated, Saturday, or summer courses. Choose the one which works best for you, your learning style, and your career goals.

If you will be attending the school on campus, then you should attend an open house at the school and meet some of your future professors. Make sure that you get along with them well and that they have a similar teaching philosophy as you. There is nothing worse than being taught to teach by a bad teacher!

If you are taking courses online, ask for a virtual tour of the classroom. Most online schools have an online open house or tour which allows you to sample a course to see how they teach their courses. Online course formats vary widely from school to school. One school may have scheduled video lectures that you must attend.

Another might be taught via YouTube videos. Yet another school may only be taught via readings and discussion. Ask the adviser about how the courses are taught at your particular school.

Try to contact current and former students of the program. Ask current students how they like their classes and if they feel prepared to get a job with the preparation given. Ask former students how long it took them to find a new job and how that has worked out for them.

As you can see, you will have to do quite a bit of research to ensure that you have chosen the right Masters degree in Education for yourself.

Trust me, all of this time and energy spent researching will be worth it when you are sure that the school you have chosen is right for you.
