I like to be in charge of any thing that I am involved in doing. That’s one of the reasons I am earning a college degree online. Being in charge of my life and having a sense of freedom are very important to me.
Self-paced online courses are the way to go as far as I am concerned. These types of classes give the students the most amount of control over their classwork. I like them a lot. You will too if you give them a chance.
The Average Online Course
The average online course allows some flexibility of when you can do the assignments. However, there are certain times when you find that you will be forced to wait to begin working on particular assignments because of the way the instructor has setup the class.
Many instructors may want you to participate in class discussions. Answering questions and then replying to the answers of other students is all part of the game. It’s usually an easy way to accrue additional points towards your grade. They can also be a pain.
Don’t get me wrong discussion boards are a beneficial learning tool. However, at times you will be forced to wait for fellow students to complete their portion of the discussions before you can make a response. This waiting for others can become a problem at times.
Additionally, depending on the instructor, some non self-paced online class assignments are posted only on a weekly basis. This makes it impossible to work ahead when you find the time or the need to do so.
Online classes are far superior to their on campus cousins as far as I am concerned. They offer student some amount of freedom. However, they do lack in some areas as I explained above.
Self-Paced College Courses
I am extremely biased in favor of college classes that allow me to take the initiative to work at a pace that I see as appropriate for completing the coursework on time.
With these types of classes, the students can work as fast or as slowly as they see fit. This goes with stating that all coursework does have a deadline for submission. However, many instructors will allow late submissions provided you have a valid excuse.
Most of the courses that I have taken of this variety are setup similar to the average online class. With the exception that most do not require participation in a discussion board. With these types of classes, you don’t have to wait on some slow moving individual to post their answer.
The big difference between the average classes and self-paced training class is with the self-paced type all of the assignments are posted from the beginning. These give students the opportunity to work through the list of assignments and get them done without waiting for the instructor to post them.
Qualities Students Need
Many of the same qualities that are needed to be a good candidate for online learning come into play with classes of this nature.
Being the type of individual who is a self-starter and can motivate themselves at all times is vitally important in success in classes of this type. Someone who needs to be told when to do something may not do well in this type of class. You need to be able to get yourself going.
Not all is lost for those that lack being a self-starter because with a little effort and practice anyone can gain these needed traits rather quickly.
I have taken many online courses that were of the self-paced variety. They take a bit more personal discipline than the average online class, but they are well worth it.
