Before I took that first college level course online, I had my doubts about whether I would be a success in this massive undertaking of mine. I imagine that many other college newbies feel the same way as I once did.

We all feel a bit apprehensive when we begin a new project. It’s nothing to be concerned about. In fact being uneasy about things to begin with might make it a better experience in the end.

I went into the online college thing without any idea how the classes operated. In all honesty, I hadn’t even taken a college level course in my life, so I was starting with a clean slate on all levels of this undertaking.

I have somehow managed to maintain a reasonably good GPA throughout my online college excursions. Therefore, I feel that at least some of what I have done to achieve this success can be attributed to how I approach my classes and the related course assignments.
How To Do Well In Online College Courses

It is worth mentioning that online studies require that each student have a reliable computer. I prefer a laptop, but you may prefer a desktop. Either type will work out fine. A fast and reliable internet connection is vital for success in these types of classes. I have had internet connections go down during test taking only one time. I was granted the chance to retake the test because of the lost connection, so it all worked out. I did find a more reliable internet provider before the next term began though.

You may find that what I do may or may not work for you, but at least read through my ramblings before you dismiss them entirely.
  • Read the course syllabus. Most of them contain the majority of the information you will need for the entire course. Keep in mind that some of them are never updated by the instructors.
  • Read all announcements that are posted by your instructors. These announcements might contain information that you will need. Read them twice if needed.
  • Read each assignment until you understand exactly what you are supposed to do. Print each assignment out and mark off as they are completed. Copy all assignments to a thumb drive and save them just in case something happens to the original.
  • Keep up with the reading assignments. Read ahead if you can, but at least stay current with the reading. Questions on tests are usually drawn from the weekly reading assignments.
  •  Ask questions when you do not understand something. Your instructors should be available for questions either by email or phone. Do not forget that your fellow students might be able to help, so take advantage of them also.
  • Be sure to make posts to the discussion board if you are required to do so. These postings are often graded as class participation. They can be an easy way to enhance your grades in the class.
  • Turn in all assignments well before their due dates. Complete all tests well before the deadlines also. You never know when a computer problem may prevent you from submitting an assignment or completing a test.
Online Testing
Mention the word test to some people and they go into shock. Some freeze up during tests and cannot answer anything. Taking tests does not need to send you into frenzy.  They are not a matter of life or death. No matter what your professor tells you.

Taking online tests can be a bit nerve racking at times. Most tests will have a limit on how long you can take to complete them. There will be a counter that ticks away as you work your way through the questions. It can be distracting, but try to use it only to see how much time you have left.

Do not let this clock bother you!  Remember the key to a successful test is preparation.
  • Study ahead of time.
  • Have notes, textbook, and any other things you might need before you begin the test.
  • Maybe have your favorite beverage and a snack at the ready, just in case.
  • Take a deep breath.
  • Click on start exam, test, or quiz and begin.
  • Read each question completely through. Make sure you understand what it is asking you. Look over all possible answers that are given. Select the best answer. In essay type, questions be certain to fully answer the questions being asked. Try not to be too brief in your answer if possible.
Success in online college courses can be achieved by almost anyone that prepares for each class that they take. Preparation is the key to success.
